5 habits for a productive morning
The minutes just after you wake up are often a good indicator of what the rest of the day will be like. Create your own morning ritual using the ideas below for inspiration, so that productivity is on the agenda for the rest of your day.
1. Plan your tomorrow.
At night, before going to bed, make a game plan for the next day, and don’t check your email or deal with other workplace demands. You’ll sleep well and you’ll know what to do first, the next day.2
2. Don’t hit the Snooze button.
If you really don’t want to get up, give yourself permission to count to five slowly, then get out of bed — no excuses. Hitting Snooze repeatedly for “just five more minutes” isn’t helpful, given that you’re already awake anyhow. Take that valuable time to enjoy other simple pleasures as the day begins.
3. Get enough light.
Exposure to light tells your brain that the day has begun and that it’s time to get moving. Open the curtains wide and, in the winter, turn on the lights. After a few minutes, you’ll feel more energized than you would if you’d left the lights off.
4. Take up a physical activity.
Do something you enjoy: a morning jog, a quick bike ride, a yoga session… After hours spent sleeping in bed, your muscles will appreciate a chance to loosen up, stretch, and move around. And especially, don’t underestimate the benefits your brain gains from physical activity! A mind as relaxed as your muscles is a winning combination.
5. Eat a healthy breakfast.
If you finish dinner at 7 pm and eat breakfast at 7 am, you haven’t had anything to eat in 12 hours! Plan enough time to make a healthy meal using simple ingredients, making sure to include protein, fruit, and whole grains.
